AI at work: How employees are using generative AI

A TELUS Digital survey found that nearly 70% of enterprise employees are using publicly available generative AI (GenAI) assistants like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini to work faster, automate tasks and spark creativity. But many are using these tools under the radar, without the permission, knowledge or oversight of their company’s IT teams. This growing use of unauthorized GenAI tools is known as “shadow AI.”
The findings highlight the essential role of GenAI in the workplace and the importance of establishing and reinforcing the right safeguards to ensure responsible and secure AI use. As GenAI tools become a staple in the workplace, enterprises have an opportunity to fine-tune their policies, and provide employees with trusted AI tools that align innovation with security.
